AB-5 (Gonzalez) was signed by Governor Newsom on September 18, 2019. Thanks to the leadership and determination of Legislative Advocate Jerry Desmond and Government Affairs Committee Chairperson Francie Koehler, as well as the written and verbal support demonstrated by many members, licensed Private Investigators were exempted from this legislation. This may be CALI's greatest legislative achievement. This achievement was made possible by years and years of building relationships in the capitol and with multiple stakeholders. There are hundreds of professions that did not receive an exemption from AB-5. Some are similar to the private investigation industry and others totally different. We owe a huge "thank you" to Ms. Koehler and Mr. Desmond for their leadership and this monumental accomplishment to save the PI profession as we know it.
