BSIS Identification Card
Private Investigator Enhanced Photo ID
Newly Licensed
If you are a Newly Licensed Investigator, the following instructions will assist you in obtaining an enhanced photo ID card.
DO NOT
start the process by first contacting PSI.
Once you have confirmed your license has been issued by either receiving the initial license in the mail, or verifying online, visit your local PSI office to have a photo taken for the ID Card. This may be the second photo taken of you at PSI.
Scroll down for a complete list of PSI locations in California.
The cost to obtain an enhanced photo ID card is built into the initial application fees paid to BSIS. PSI should NOT charge you a fee.
Provide PSI with your Private Investigator license number. If the PSI representative asks you for a “File Number”, remind them they should look you up by your Private Investigator license number. Your license number is what BSIS will use to notify PSI of your eligibility to obtain a new ID card.
PSI will mail the new ID card to you.
License Renewal
If you are renewing your Private Investigator's License, the following instructions will assist you in obtaining an enhanced photo ID card.
DO NOT
start the process by first contacting PSI.
First, begin the renewal process as soon as you receive notification from BSIS that your Private Investigator's License will soon expire. Allowing your license to expire may result in a delay not only in obtaining a renewal, but also in obtaining a new enhanced photo ID card.
CALI recommends you create an account and use
BreEZe
when renewing your license. You may still mail your renewal to BSIS, but this will greatly increase the length of time to complete the process. Using
BreEZe
to complete the renewal process will allow you to receive your renewal within one to two weeks. Mailing in your renewal paperwork could mean a delay of two to three months. If the above links fail to work, you can find the BreEZe site at
www.breeze.ca.gov
.
Once you have confirmed your license has been renewed by either receiving the renewal in the mail, or verifying online, visit your local PSI office. Scroll down for a complete list of PSI locations in California.

PSI will mail the new ID card to you.
Damaged, Lost or Stolen ID
If your photo ID card has been lost, stolen or damaged, the following instructions will assist you in obtaining an enhanced photo ID card.
DO NOT
start the process by first contacting PSI.
First, download and complete the Application for Replacement of Private Investigator Company License. The application is not available online via BreEZe. Instead, you can download the form
HERE
. Read all instructions on page two of the application before you begin. An incomplete or incorrectly completed application will delay processing.
Important - In the section titled "Explanation" write in "Photo ID Card".
A $25.00 processing fee must be paid directly to BSIS. Make your check payable to BSIS. PSI should NOT charge you a fee.
Mail the completed application and the $25.00 processing fee to P.O. Box 989002, West Sacramento, CA 95798-9002 via First Class US Mail Return Receipt.
You will not receive notification from BSIS or PSI that your application has been received or approved. Approximately 30 days after you submit the application, your funds should have cleared, the application should have been approved by BSIS and your file will have been electronically sent to PSI for processing. You can reach out to PSI by calling your local office and confirming they have received it.
Once the confirmation has been made visit your local PSI office.

PSI LOCATIONS
PSI
requests that you
call before you arrive
to a
PSI Center Location
to
make sure they are open and not overwhelmed with testing.
Most PSI testing centers do not have an answering machine. If you call while they are at lunch or after hours, the call will be picked up by a fax machine or ring for an extended period of time.
You cannot make an appointment, but drop ins are welcome.
