WHO WE ARE

Founded in 1947, the California Association of Licensed Investigators (CALI) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to protecting and enhancing the private investigation industry in California and the United States.

CALI is the largest Private Investigator association in the world. With 1100 members throughout the country, CALI is focused on advancing the industry through a strong legislative program and numerous educational offerings, including an annual conference, Webinars, new licensee training, professional development programs, and CALI's proprietary Certified Professional Investigator (CPI) designation to qualified investigators in California.

Members of the California Association of Licensed Investigators must adhere to CALI's Code of Ethics and Conduct. Therefore, by requesting to join CALI, you affirm that you will abide by the CALI Code of Ethics and Conduct, Bylaws and that you support the association's mission and core values.

Membership Benefits

MEMBERSHIP POLICY

Membership is individual and non-transferable, and dues are non-refundable nor prorated. The membership cycle is on a 12-month basis. Members are assigned an anniversary date; therefore, regardless of which month you join, you will receive benefits for 12 months.

There is no fee to apply for membership. The membership dues are due upon notice of membership approval.

CALI members can cancel their membership anytime; however, no portion of their membership dues shall be prorated or refunded.

CALI membership fee is non-refundable once membership has been approved and/or for lack of Listserv usage or Listserv removal due to sanction/listserv rule violation(s).

Tax Deductions
The California Association of Licensed Investigators (CALI) is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit organization, EIN # 23-7217129. Contributions to section 501(c)(6) organizations are not deductible as charitable contributions on your federal income tax return. They may be deductible as trade or business expenses if ordinary and necessary in the conduct of your business. Please consult your tax professional. CALI estimates that your dues, which are allocated to lobbying expenses are 35% for the year 2023-2024.

As a part of our renewal process and efforts to 'go green,' CALI is paperless in our renewal notifications for membership dues. To ensure the delivery of renewal reminders, we ask our members to review their member profiles and update them whenever there is a change in their contact information.

If, for any reason, CALI is unable to charge the credit card in your member profile, you will receive an email notification requesting that you update the credit card information. Our membership system will email reminders until the payment information is updated. If no action is taken and the membership grace period ends, your membership status will change to expired.

Automatic Membership Renewal
Automatic Membership Renewal
Automatic renewal is a convenient way to renew your membership before it expires, guaranteeing uninterrupted* membership access to your member benefits.

CALI members enrolled in auto-renewal can modify their credit card payment information at any time through their CALI Member Profile. However, for security reasons, the CALI staff is not permitted to make changes and does not have access to view complete credit card information in a member's profile. Only the CALI member can add or edit their credit card payment information. Click here for instructions on how to update credit card information in your CALI member profile.

*If CALI cannot process your auto-renewal payment using the credit card in your member profile for any reason, you will receive an email notification prompting you to update the payment information. Our membership system will send email reminders until the payment information is updated. If no action is taken and the membership grace period concludes, your membership status will change to expired.

Individuals who wish to apply for membership in CALI should first ensure that they meet the CALI membership criteria before applying. Click here to review the membership classifications.

Proof of Eligibility for Membership Classification

Please be prepared to upload a copy of your valid PI license, proof of employment, or the documentation required for your membership classification to your online membership application.

Review of New Membership Applications
The Membership Committee screens all new applications to determine whether the applicant meets the CALI membership criteria for which they applied.

Applications with missing information will be considered incomplete and will not be processed for review and approval until the CALI office receives the required documentation. 

The review and approval process may take up to 7-10 business days or less after receiving all the appropriate information.
